For breeding the
Northern Lapwing
prefers low-growing wet meadows that are temporarily flooded or waterlogged, wet heathlands and other
pastural landscapes. If no such wet habitats are available, Northern Lapwings revert to arable land (maize, wheat, rape, turnips, potatoes) for breeding.
In Germany, the species is widespread in the North German Plain and in the Alpine foreland, whereas in the lowmountain ranges it is restricted to flood
plains and open landscapes. In Germany, there are 63,000–100,000 pairs breeding. Due to drainage of wetlands and subsequent intensive land-use,
which still continues today, the population numbers in Germany are declining, both in the long term and the short term (1990–2009).
