The
Red Kite
prefers open and richly structured landscapes. It nests in small woods, in rows of trees or even in single trees, in undisturbed mature
woods with an open canopy and at the edge of forests. It is mainly distributed in the lowlands of northeastern Germany, in the western central uplands,
in the Swabian Alb and the western foothills of the Alps. The breeding population is estimated to number 12,000–18000 pairs. This means that more
than half of the world population breeds in Germany. The long-term population trend is regarded as stable, but the population has been declining in the
short-term (1988–2009).
