The
White Stork
prefers grasslands with high groundwater levels. The greatest concentrations occur in periodically flooded valleys and in floodplain
meadows.Today, it nests predominantly in villages. More than two thirds of the German breeding population occur in the Northeast German Plain, with
the largest concentrations in the Elbe valley and adjacent areas, in the Wendland, Altmark and Prignitz regions and in the Spree Forest. The breeding
population is estimated at 4,200–4,600 pairs. While the long-term trend is negative and has been characterised by periodic fluctuations, the size of the
population stabilised in the 1990s and so the short-term (1985–2009) trend is regarded as increasing.
